Term Distraction
Definitions In Unified Mindfulness, a breakdown in concentration, a sensory experience outside the focus range of your technique, or an interruption, any of which could disrupt your practice if greeted unskillfully, or be helpful for your training if used skillfully. In more detail, distractions include:
  1. As you practice, any moment when you detect a breakdown of concentration that affects your ability to do the technique (such as when you intend to focus on your breath and your attention gets yanked to something else, like an itch on your leg).
  2. Any sensory experience that is outside the focus range of a technique, whether your attention gets pulled to it or not (such as anything in the See and Feel Sense Categories when you’re doing Just Hear). In UM, Focus Space includes everything in the focus range, and Distraction Space includes everything outside of the focus range. These complement each other, meaning Focus Space plus Distraction Space equals all possible sensory experience.
  3. Anything that interrupts your practice session (such as falling asleep or taking an important call that causes you to drop intentional practice).
