Term Local Intensity and Wider Spread
Definitions When a sensory event has an effect on more distant areas of the sensory system. Sometimes called a “splash, ripple” and often used to describe sensations in the body, but can happen in any sense category or across sense categories. The level of intensity may stay the same as it spreads, but more commonly it decreases with distance from the origin point. The spread of the sensory experience and/or its influence may be detected consciously (Conscious Spread), or it may go undetected (Subconscious Spread). When you’re able to track the spread spatially and be aware of it consciously, you tend to suffer less and enhance fulfillment.

Wider Spread:

  1. The area of greatest intensity may expand somewhat but remain relatively local (for instance, an itch on your ankle expands across the whole space of your foot.)
  2. 2-Way or 3-Way Spread: The area of greatest intensity spreads to and/or influences other sense categories (e.g., the itch on your ankle triggers an image of the itch in your mind).

Global Spread:

  1. The area of greatest intensity may spread across the whole sense category (for instance, an image in your mind seems to fill all of See Space, or your hands get so big as you focus on them that they seem to take up the space of your whole body).
  2. The area of greatest intensity may seem to go beyond the boundary of the sense category (for instance, silence becomes so deep, rich, and expansive that the normal sense of Hear Space goes away and the space where hearing occurs gets much bigger and more spacious).
  3. The area of greatest intensity may spread to fully cover more than one sense category and/or go beyond the sense categories in some combination (for instance, the deep, rich silence develops into an extraordinary spaciousness in Hear and the felt sense of the body’s boundaries drops away.
