Term Interest-Opportunity-Necessity
Definitions A simple way to remember your choices about what technique to practice, and which strategies, settings and technique options to use, or whether to stay with a technique. Can be applied to a specific practice session or your practice routine in general.

You can make decisions based on:

  1. Interest: Motivated by technique(s) you find appealing. (For example, you’re interested in exploring how SHF Out affects SHF In, so you do SHF with inclusive noting.)
  2. Opportunity: Determined by the presence of Windows (Reward States, including CC&E rewards). (For example, you notice pleasant energy in the body after a run, so you do a microhit of Feel Flow.)
  3. Necessity: Dictated by the needs of the moment. (For example, you can’t get yourself to practice in any other way, so you decide to practice with music for a week.)

Whatever you decide, try not to technique hop (switch from technique to technique out of drivenness or unconsciousness) and don’t make a big deal out of how you choose a technique.
