Term Sensory Challenges & Adverse Reactions
Definitions Destabilizing, unexpected, and/or unpleasant sensory experiences that happen as a result of mindfulness practice can range from mild to more intense. Even intense experiences are rarely serious and typically don’t last. They’re usually limited to sensory effects but can also involve motor or behavior changes. Self CARE strategies are recommended to prevent and correct. If they intersect with other issues such as mental health challenges, or they become persistent, supplements may be needed.

By contrast, a true adverse reaction means that meditation itself has caused serious problems, such as hospitalization. When intense sensory experiences rise to the level of a true adverse reaction, which is rare, they require additional support, including possible emergency interventions, as well as the usual recommendations of consistent Self CARE routines and other supplements, where needed.
