Term | Focus Range & Instruction Set |
Definitions | Focus Range: The sensory experience or set of experiences that you focus on, spontaneously drop into, or return attention to, depending on the technique. Can be organized by space, time, quality, and most commonly, some combination of those (called Scope). The scope of UM Standard Techniques is mostly organized by quality (aspects and sub-aspects of See Hear Feel). The scope of Special Exercises may also be more spatial, such as the narrow scope of the breath at the tip of the nose, or time oriented, such as the brief scope of Just Note Gone—the instant of disappearance. Contrasts with Distraction Set/Space.
Instruction Set: The directions you follow (often from memory) to practice a technique. A robust technique includes ways you can develop CC&E, whether clearly explained (e.g., you develop Equanimity by creating relaxation in the body) or more indirect (e.g., you’re making friends with your emotions). Some parts of an Instruction Set include things like Contact Strategy, Content Strategy, Focus Style, Concentration Type, and Technique Options. |
